Past the new mothers,

Through doors at the back
I saw some old friends from school,
A banquet and prom dresses,
I didn’t go in.

One moment I swam there,

Further down the hall,
I saw him standing in a tux,
Wide-open hands,
I floated to his smile,
He wrapped his arms around me

I turned one last corner
Into a room,
Coffins and flowers,
The stillness of death,

I saw you there
Sitting at a table,
Sad laughter with friends,
A beautiful girl
Dressed like a queen,
The searching could end,

I moved past the dead,

But you couldn’t see,
